Scripture Union currently operates in over 130 countries across the world. Its activities and methods vary but they are linked through an international fellowship. Each national movement is autonomous, and seeks to work through local people in ways that are sensitive to the national culture.
Engaging with the Bible is at the heart of everything that Scripture Union does. The Bible is our primary place of meeting God, hearing his word and responding to him. Understanding the culture in which children and young people live is essential to effective ministry, as we build bridges between the world of the Bible and their everyday world. SU is working in diverse cultures – cultures influenced by post-modernism, saturated by media and technology, dominated by faiths other than Christianity, affected by poverty, or fractured by AIDS or conflict. Pray for SU movements around the world as they encourage new generations to experience the transforming power of the Word of God. And, pray that, in each situation, SU staff and volunteers will have the kind of creativity, wisdom, patience, imagination, kindness, and sensitivity that will encourage children and young people to follow Jesus.
Our Scripture theme for this special week of prayer in the Scripture Union Community is: ‘Lord, teach us to pray’ (Luke 11:1)
This information to guide us in our prayers is available in the SUI Week of Prayer 2008
and is grouped under headings that are a particular concern to SU. There are headings for general prayer and items specific to Scripture Union.
These Scripture passages are suggested to assist and inform our prayers.
· Thanking God for hopeful developments and responses in 2007 and looking forward to 2008. Colossians 1:9-12, Hebrews 4:12 and Isaiah 55:10, 11 are passages that can enrich our praise and thanksgiving.
· Bringing to God our needs, concerns and intercessions as we look back at 2007 and forward into 2008. Psalm 37:1-8; 2 Corinthians 4:7-10; 1 Corinthians 12:12, 21, 26 are passages that we can pray into these situations.
